Graffiti Removal

What Is Graffiti?

Graffiti often consists of colorful drawings, symbols, or text applied to walls, facades, or various objects. It can be created in different ways, but spray paint is by far the most common method. Graffiti is often applied anonymously and without permission, usually to make a statement. Unfortunately, this type of graffiti can cause permanent damage to the surface beneath it.

However, not all graffiti is unwanted. Street advertising and street art are examples of graffiti that are often appreciated and even commissioned. Graffiti is therefore much more than a few tags or illegal markings on trains, public buildings, and traffic signs. In fact, some graffiti artists have significantly improved the image of graffiti through commissioned artwork.

Graffiti Removal

While some people consider graffiti a form of art, others see unwanted “masterpieces” as visual pollution that should be removed as quickly as possible. If you belong to the latter group, you know that graffiti removal is not always an easy task.

The difficulty largely depends on the surface on which the graffiti has been applied. Brick, natural stone, concrete, wood, glass, and plastic all require different removal methods. The type of paint used and how long the graffiti has been present also play an important role. In general, graffiti should be removed as quickly as possible. Removal can be time-consuming, and even after the graffiti has been cleaned away, a visible shadow or stain may remain. Fortunately, there are effective solutions available.

Methods for Removing Graffiti

There are several ways to remove graffiti. The most suitable method depends not only on the surface but also on the size of the graffiti and the location where it has been applied.

  • Steam Cleaning. A safe and environmentally friendly method is steam cleaning. It is often one of the most cost-effective ways to remove graffiti. Boiling hot water is sprayed onto the surface, causing the paint to soften and loosen from the substrate. Steam cleaning is suitable for materials such as brick, concrete, metal, natural stone, and plaster. However, when dealing with old graffiti or highly resistant paints, this method may not always provide satisfactory results.
  • Chemical Cleaning. Most graffiti can be effectively removed using chemical cleaning agents. These are typically applied with a brush or sprayer and then rinsed away with water. Aggressive solvents can severely damage surfaces and may pose health risks to users. For this reason, it is advisable to use biodegradable cleaning solutions whenever possible, preferably products that do not carry hazard symbols. The fewer hazard symbols a product has, the smaller its impact on people and the environment.
  • Blasting. Blasting is a powerful method used to remove both old and new layers of paint. It is commonly applied in cases of extremely stubborn graffiti. This technique involves using compressed air to project abrasive materials such as grit or sand onto the surface, removing the paint layer. Care must be taken, as improper blasting may damage the underlying surface. Blasting also releases fine dust particles that can be harmful when inhaled. Natural sand, which was commonly used in the past, contains crystalline silica. If inhaled, silica dust can cause silicosis, a serious occupational lung disease. For this reason, the abrasive materials used must comply with strict safety standards. As an alternative, rotating brush systems are available that remove coatings and dirt without many of the disadvantages associated with traditional blasting methods.

Prevention

The most suitable cleaning method depends largely on the type of surface involved. Another important factor is the degree to which the paint has penetrated the material. The more porous the surface, the more difficult graffiti will be to remove.

An anti-graffiti coating can help prevent paint from being absorbed into the substrate. This protective coating reduces adhesion, making future graffiti much easier to remove.

Both the coating and the graffiti can typically be removed using hot water under high pressure. Anti-graffiti coatings are available in both semi-permanent and permanent versions.

With a semi-permanent coating, both the graffiti and the coating layer are removed during cleaning. With a permanent coating, only the graffiti is removed while the protective layer remains intact. These coatings are suitable for surfaces such as metal and stone.

Products for Graffiti Removal

Graffiti is still frequently removed using unsafe and environmentally harmful solvents, such as turpentine and acetone. These flammable volatile liquids can negatively affect surfaces, soil, and waterways, and may also pose health risks to users.

Fortunately, a wide range of eco-friendly graffiti removers is available today. When selecting a graffiti remover, pay close attention to the hazard symbols displayed on the product label. Products without hazard symbols generally present fewer inherent risks to both people and the environment.

Frequently Asked Questions About Graffiti Removal

Frequently Asked Questions About Graffiti Removal

The best method for removing graffiti depends on the surface and the type of paint used. Porous materials such as brick and concrete often require a different approach than smooth surfaces like glass or metal. The sooner graffiti is removed, the greater the chance of preventing permanent discoloration.

What Is the Best Way to Remove Graffiti?

There are several methods for removing graffiti, including steam cleaning, chemical cleaning, and abrasive blasting. The most suitable method depends on the surface, the age of the graffiti, and the type of paint used. For many applications, safe and biodegradable graffiti removers provide an effective alternative to aggressive solvents.

Can You Remove Graffiti Without Damaging the Surface?

Yes, provided that the correct cleaning method is used. Aggressive solvents or improper blasting techniques can damage the underlying surface. That is why it is important to choose a product and method that are suitable for the material on which the graffiti has been applied.

How Do You Remove Graffiti from Brick or Concrete?

Brick and concrete are porous materials that allow paint to penetrate deep into the surface. As a result, graffiti is often more difficult to remove than it is from smooth surfaces. A specially formulated graffiti remover, combined with the correct cleaning technique, usually delivers the best results.

Is Graffiti Removal Harmful to the Environment?

Traditional solvents can be harmful to both people and the environment. That is why more and more organizations are choosing eco-friendly graffiti removers that are biodegradable and pose fewer risks to users, buildings, and the environment.

How Quickly Should Graffiti Be Removed?

Graffiti should be removed as soon as possible. The longer paint remains on a surface, the greater the likelihood that it will penetrate deeper into the material. This can result in shadowing or permanent discoloration. Shadowing can be easily removed with our E.P. Shadowremover and/or E.P. Shadowremover Plus.

Which Surfaces Are Suitable for Graffiti Removers?

Graffiti removers can be used on a variety of surfaces, including brick, concrete, natural stone, metal, glass, wood, and plastic. The choice of product and cleaning method depends on the material and the degree to which the paint has adhered to the surface.

How Can You Prevent New Graffiti?

One effective way to make future graffiti easier to remove is by applying an anti-graffiti coating. This protective layer reduces paint adhesion, making graffiti easier to remove and helping to minimize damage to the underlying surface.
